A 20-year-old Detroit man was found dead in the front passenger seat of a car early Tuesday morning, killed in what police describe as an ambush shooting near Williams Lake Road and Hanford Drive in Waterford Township. He was discovered around 6 a.m. on Sept. 15, and investigators say the killing followed a meeting that was set up in advance and turned into a gunfight.
According to ClickOnDetroit | WDIV Local 4, four men had traveled to a pre-arranged location to meet a woman when several men armed with assault rifles opened fire on their car. The gunfire struck the front-seat passenger, who did not survive. Police said the shooting amounted to an ambush rather than a chance encounter.
Suspects Tracked Down Hours Apart
Detectives moved quickly in the hours after the shooting. One suspect was arrested in Clinton Township following a short foot chase, the station's report states, while a second suspect was taken into custody in Eastpointe around 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 16. Both were brought back to Waterford for questioning by Waterford detectives.
During the investigation, police recovered a backpack containing two handguns, per the same account. It remains unclear how many shooters were involved or what led to the confrontation, details that have not been made public as the case unfolds.
Case Heads to Prosecutors as Probe Continues
The investigation is ongoing, and Waterford police say they will continue gathering facts and evidence before presenting the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide whether to file charges. No charging decision had been announced as of the latest update from the station.
The shooting adds to a year of shifting homicide numbers across Oakland County. The county recorded 10 reported homicides through June 30, 2026, down 28% from the 14 tallied over the same stretch in 2025, according to theoaklandpress.com. Pontiac led the county with four cases through that same period, followed by Farmington Hills with two, even as the county's full-year 2025 total climbed to 30 reported homicides, a 30% jump from 2024.
Waterford Township has already appeared in this year's homicide count. In a separate incident in late July, a Waterford Township man died following a shooting in Pontiac, and a suspect was taken into custody, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office as reported by detroitnews.com.
