A jury has convicted former Sinai-Grace Hospital nurse Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios on two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, while finding him not guilty on three other counts tied to the same case. The 47-year-old Detroit nurse is scheduled to be sentenced on October 23, 2026, and remains in custody, where he has stayed since October 2025 after failing to post bond.
The verdict, handed down this week, resolved one of several criminal cases stacked against Figueroa-Berrios, according to FOX 2 Detroit. The station reported he had been charged with five counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in the case that just went to trial, though a separate account from WXYZ described the original charges differently, listing three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct alongside two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Either way, jurors ultimately convicted him on two counts and acquitted him on the remaining three.
During the trial, members of the Sinai-Grace Hospital security team and a Detroit Police officer took the stand, per WXYZ's earlier coverage of the proceedings. The allegations centered on Figueroa-Berrios sexually assaulting patients while he was on the job at the hospital, and one report identified an alleged victim in the case as a 26-year-old woman.
A Hospital's Response and a Widening Criminal Net
Sinai-Grace Hospital has said it acted appropriately once concerns were raised, telling WXYZ it notified law enforcement and has been cooperating with the investigation. That single trial, however, represents only a fraction of what Figueroa-Berrios is facing. He is also confronting sexual assault charges in several other cases, and the number of criminal cases against him had climbed to eight, according to a separate FOX 2 Detroit report from earlier this year.
That same report detailed how Figueroa-Berrios was charged in five additional incidents involving patients, with one of those cases reportedly dating back to November 23, 2021, and touching on alleged conduct at a psychiatric hospital in Livonia. Taken together with the case that just went to trial, the alleged incidents across the various cases span from December 2021 through August 2025, according to WXYZ's reporting.
Civil Lawsuits Add to the Fallout
Beyond the criminal cases, Figueroa-Berrios is also named in civil litigation. In January, an additional lawsuit was filed on behalf of 14 alleged victims accusing him of sexual assault, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. That lawsuit was filed alongside the mounting criminal cases against him.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has documented the case's escalation in its own announcements. In September 2025, the office announced Figueroa-Berrios had been charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a 41-year-old woman, according to a Wayne County Prosecutor's Office press release. By January 2026, prosecutors announced five new criminal sexual conduct cases against him, per a separate release from the prosecutor's office.
It remains unclear what the outcomes will be for the other pending criminal cases and civil lawsuits still working through the courts. For now, attention turns to the October 23 sentencing hearing, where Figueroa-Berrios will learn his punishment for the two convictions secured in this latest trial.
