A white Dodge Challenger slammed into the passenger side of a gray SUV just south of I-10 near Katy Mills Mall Tuesday night, sending two people to the hospital and prompting a Life Flight helicopter to descend on the Katy area. The SUV's female driver was flown to Memorial Hermann in stable condition, while a male passenger in her vehicle was taken by ground ambulance, also stable. The Challenger's driver walked away uninjured.
The crash happened around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday as the SUV was crossing Katy Fort Bend Road westbound and the Challenger was traveling southbound, according to Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Koehler, who responded to the scene and spoke with FOX 26 Houston. Three adults were involved in total, and all three were reported stable or uninjured. Deputy Koehler said there were no signs of intoxication among those involved, and as of publication, the Harris County Sheriff's Office had not filed any charges. Deputies have not released the names of those involved, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
A Corridor With a History
The intersection of Katy Fort Bend Road and I-10 was flagged years ago by the Katy Times as one of the city's most dangerous, with Texas Department of Transportation records showing that 50% of the four crashes there from January 1 through July 24, 2023, resulted in injuries.
The City of Katy has tried to address the congestion before. In November 2023, the city installed a new traffic signal at Kingsland Boulevard and Katy Fort Bend Road, according to a notice from the City of Katy.
