A 4:30 a.m. start makes Donut Block & Cafe an option for Spring’s earliest coffee-and-pastry run. The shop is at 3403 Louetta Road and, according to Community Impact, serves donuts, coffee, kolaches and croissant sandwiches daily until 1 p.m.
The shop held a soft opening in mid-September. Community Impact reported that the full menu was not yet available during the soft-opening stages; that report does not establish whether the full menu is available now.
A Texas pastry with Czech roots
Kolaches have a history in Texas beyond any one bakery: Smithsonian magazine traces the pastry’s arrival to Czech migration in the late 19th century and its adoption in rural communities such as West, Texas. That background offers cultural context for a menu item, but does not indicate how Donut Block & Cafe prepares its kolaches or whether the business has a Czech connection.
Other Houston-area openings offer a comparison, not a trend
Doughnuts and kolaches have also appeared together at other area bakery openings. Community Impact reported that a Shipley Do-Nuts opened at 602 Lake Olympia Parkway in Missouri City on Oct. 28, and that another Shipley location opened at 17155 Hwy. 59 in Humble on Nov. 15, offering doughnuts and kolaches. Those are separate chain locations in different communities; the examples show a similar menu pairing, not evidence of a rise in openings or a connection to Donut Block & Cafe.
