Donut Kingdom has opened its newest storefront at 413 N. Magnolia Drive in Tallahassee's Mahan Square shopping center, wrapping up a launch process that dragged on for about a year and a half. The locally owned dessert shop announced its soft opening on Facebook on September 10, telling fans, “The wait is finally over, and we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors! Come celebrate with us and grab your favorite donuts.”
The bakery, which has served Tallahassee since 2009, had originally anticipated opening the Magnolia Drive location back in July 2025, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Hiba Khalil told the paper that “numerous moving pieces repeatedly delayed the opening,” pointing to permitting and contracting issues as the main culprits. “Opening after about a year and a half was a good feeling,” Khalil said.
Why Magnolia Drive Made Sense
Khalil said Magnolia Drive is better aligned with areas where Donut Kingdom sees the most demand, according to the same report. The new shop sits less than a mile from Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, placing it within a commercial corridor anchored by medical offices and retail centers, as detailed by an Apartments.com listing describing the surrounding Mahan Square area.
The move also follows years of public investment along that stretch of road. Leon County and the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency wrapped up Phase II of the Magnolia Drive Multi-Use Trail Project in January 2026, adding new multi-use paths, street lighting, and underground utilities to the South Magnolia corridor, according to Leon County Government. Those corridor upgrades were completed before Donut Kingdom's opening, potentially helping the new shop capture drive-by and foot traffic in the area.
A Third Chapter For a Local Brand
Donut Kingdom now operates two other Tallahassee locations, including its original 1705 W. Tennessee St. storefront, which put the brand directly in the Florida State University campus corridor to capture student traffic during gamedays and late-night study sessions, per Donut Kingdom. The family-owned bakery, founded by Adam Khalil and his family, built its early reputation on scratch-made pastries prepared during overnight graveyard shifts, according to Tallahassee Foodies.
The company had previously expanded to a third location on North Monroe Street in May 2020 during the pandemic, per the same Tallahassee Foodies account, before closing that shop at the Lake Jackson Trading Post in June 2025. That closure cleared the way for the shift toward Magnolia Drive, where Khalil says the shop aims to serve Tallahassee, put smiles on people's faces, and deliver the best donuts in town. The shop offers handmade daily assortments of fluffy pastries and is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
Permitting Hurdles Are Common For Florida Bakeries
The delays Khalil described are not unusual for standalone retail bakeries in Florida. Commercial bakeries must obtain a Retail Food Establishment Permit from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under Florida Statute § 500.12, a process that requires facility plan reviews and sanitation approvals before opening, according to FDACS guidance. That regulatory path differs from the one governing sit-down restaurants and mobile food vendors, which instead fall under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation's Division of Hotels and Restaurants, per the state agency's published jurisdiction rules.
Donut Kingdom's extended opening timeline arrives amid a tighter overall climate for Florida's food service industry. The state's food service sector expanded to 67,545 active licenses by October 2025, up from roughly 51,000 a decade earlier, according to Glover Law's review of state hospitality trends. At the same time, food service operators in 2026 are contending with elevated labor expenses, insurance adjustments, and tighter credit conditions, prompting many owners statewide to favor careful site selection over rapid expansion, per research published by Florida Food Handler Certificates.
Donut Kingdom has also leaned on cross-promotional partnerships at its existing shops. Its original West Tennessee Street location has hosted local cookie concept Mo Cookies inside the store, a collaboration highlighted in an April 2023 Facebook video from the cookie brand. More details on the new Magnolia Drive shop, including hours and offerings, are available on Donut Kingdom's website.
