A fender-bender in the parking lot of Cresthill Middle School in Douglas County escalated into a stabbing on Aug. 13, sending a school resource officer sprinting to pull two grown men apart before paramedics could even arrive. One of the men ended up with a stab wound serious enough that the officer had to apply a chest seal and pack the wound himself. Now, more than a month later, both men are facing criminal charges.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the school at about 7:34 a.m. on a report of a physical altercation that started as a traffic collision in the parking lot before spilling into a nearby neighborhood. As reported by FOX31 Denver, the confrontation began in the school’s drop-off line before it turned physical.
Officer Ran Toward the Fight, Then Went to Work
A school resource officer ran from Cresthill Middle School to where the altercation was unfolding, the sheriff’s office says. The officer separated the two men and recovered a knife from the scene. One of the men had been stabbed and required first aid, according to Yahoo News.
Per the sheriff’s account, the officer applied a chest seal and performed emergency wound packing before paramedics arrived to take over treatment. The sheriff’s office has not released the identity of the man who was stabbed, nor described the extent of his injuries or whether he was hospitalized.
Two Men, Two Very Different Charge Sheets
Jeremy John Larranaga, 45, was arrested the same day as the incident and faces the heavier slate of charges: first-degree assault, child abuse, second-degree assault, menacing, disorderly conduct and reckless driving, the sheriff’s office says.
Jacinto Louis Herrera, 39, was not arrested until Sept. 15 — more than a month after the incident — with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force. He faces second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and driving-under-restraint charges, per the same sheriff’s office account. The sheriff’s office says a multi-week investigation by its detectives gathered evidence and reviewed the circumstances of the altercation before charges were officially recommended against both men.
Neither the sheriff’s office nor other available reporting has released charging documents, court case numbers, or hearing dates, and the charges reflect recommendations rather than any confirmed conviction or final court outcome. No statements from either man, their attorneys, witnesses or school officials have been made public.
