A driver fleeing a Kitsap County deputy hit speeds of up to 111 mph through north Kitsap County before crashing through a fence, slamming into a tractor and getting trapped inside his burning SUV. Deputies and local officers had to break out the windows and fight the flames just to pull him free before he was airlifted to a hospital because of the severity of his injuries.
The chase began when a deputy tried to stop the driver for speeding. The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office account reported by KOMO placed the attempted stop on State Route 104 in Kingston at about 11:30 p.m. and described the rescue as occurring Monday. A separate account from KIRO 7, published September 23, 2026, said the incident began around 10:30 p.m. in Poulsbo. The accounts differ on the time and place.
Instead of pulling over, the driver took off, and the deputy chased him through north Kitsap County as speeds climbed to 111 mph, per the same account. At some point the deputy lost sight of the fleeing SUV, only to find it again a short time later — already crashed and burning.
Fence, Tractor, Then Flames
The SUV crashed through a fence, hit a tractor and caught fire in the 20600 block of Miller Bay Road Northeast, leaving the driver trapped inside the wreckage as fire took hold of the vehicle. The crash left the driver trapped in the burning wreckage.
Officers from Suquamish and Port Gamble rushed to help the deputy already on scene, breaking the SUV's windows, fighting the fire and ultimately freeing the driver from the wreck, the station's report notes. Fox News offered an additional detail on how the fire itself was knocked down, reporting that a Port Gamble police officer arrived with a fire extinguisher and put out the flames while the effort to free the driver continued.
Airlifted After Rescue
The injured driver was airlifted to a hospital given the severity of his injuries, according to KOMO. The driver's name, age and condition following the airlift have not been released.
Body-camera video from one of the deputies captured the rescue. Per the same account, the driver is expected to be charged with reckless driving and eluding once he recovers. Fox News reported that authorities have not identified the man publicly, and it remains unclear whether charges have since been filed.
