A driver died early Friday morning after their car crashed and burst into flames on Highway 111 near Desert Horizons Drive in Indian Wells, according to authorities. Deputies and fire crews arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed, and the sole occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Riverside County Sheriff's Department Lt. Deirdre Vickers said deputies and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department crews responded at approximately 2:05 a.m. Friday to put out the blaze, according to a statement reported by MyNewsLA. The crash happened at Highway 111 and Desert Horizons Drive. Desert Horizons Country Club is a private 18-hole residential golf community at 44900 Desert Horizons Drive, according to the club.
As KESQ reported, the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station Traffic Reconstruction Team has taken over the investigation, and the cause of the crash remains under review. Authorities have not released the identity of the driver, who was withheld pending notification of next of kin, and officials said no additional details would be released at this time.
Road Closures Snarled Traffic Overnight
To let investigators work the scene, authorities shut down Westbound Highway 111 at El Dorado Drive, Highway 111 at Rancho Palmeros, Highway 111 at Cook Street, and Eastbound Province Way, per the same account from MyNewsLA. KESQ separately reported that State Highway 111 was closed between Cook Street and El Dorado Drive before reopening to traffic. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Deputy Ju Yoo at the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station at (760) 836-1600, per KESQ's report.

Indian Wells does not run its own police department. Instead, the city contracts with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, with deputies working out of the 83,000-square-foot Palm Desert Sheriff's Station, as Hoodline previously reported.
It remains unknown whether speed, mechanical failure, medical emergency, or impairment played any role in Friday's fatal crash. The investigation by the Palm Desert Station Traffic Reconstruction Team is ongoing, and officials have not indicated when the driver's identity will be released.
