A house fire that tore through the basement, first floor, second floor and attic of an East Louisville home on Labor Day has been ruled intentionally set, and officials say a suspect was detained right at the scene. Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS crews responded to the 3500 block of Sample Way around 12:26 p.m. Monday, arriving within five minutes to find flames that had already spread from an attached garage into the basement, first floor, second floor and attic.
No injuries were reported, and the home was unoccupied when crews arrived, according to WLKY, which reported that officials determined the fire was intentionally set. The Louisville Metro Arson Bureau is leading the investigation into how the blaze started. Louisville Metro Police officers detained an adult male suspect at the scene and transferred him to the Metro Arson Bureau, which is expected to file formal criminal charges, according to a separate report from WDRB.
Firefighters Battled Conflicting Reports of People Trapped Inside
Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS dispatched 30 personnel — firefighters, command staff and EMS crews — to fight the blaze, per the department's own account. Responding crews deployed three hose lines and brought the structure fire under control in approximately 33 minutes after dispatch, with the fire knocked down just before 1 p.m.
Because crews received conflicting reports on whether anyone was trapped inside, firefighters initiated an interior fire attack and conducted primary searches of both floors before confirming the home was clear. Afterward, overhaul operations included removing debris, extinguishing residual hot spots, checking heat signatures with thermal imaging cameras, and securing the structure with fire line tape so arson investigators could take over the scene.
A Suburban Subdivision Built for Families, Not Fires
The 3500 block of Sample Way sits in Forest Springs, a subdivision in East Louisville's 40245 zip code built up in the 1990s and 2000s and known for its brick ranch and two-story single-family homes, according to real estate records published by Homes.com. Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS is Kentucky's third-largest fire department and second-largest integrated EMS provider, running 11 stations across nearly 100 square miles of East Louisville, Oldham and Shelby counties.
The Metro Arson Bureau will handle the case. It remains unclear exactly what charges the suspect will ultimately face. The applicable charge and potential penalty remain unclear, and whether the relevant statute applies here may hinge on the home's occupancy status at the time of the fire.
Part of a Wider String of Jefferson County Arson Cases
The Sample Way fire adds to a run of intentional fires across Metro Louisville in recent weeks. Just four days earlier, a 3-alarm fire whose cause remained under investigation and had not been determined to be arson destroyed a vacant building and displaced residents in an adjacent apartment complex in Old Louisville, injuring a firefighter in the process. Investigators are also still pursuing a suspect in a string of Shively vehicle fires that caused $200,000 in damage, and Louisville has separately prosecuted an arson case involving a man accused of setting a fire between his fiancée's wheelchair and an exit. Whether the Sample Way fire is connected to any of those cases remains an open question for investigators.
