A man and a woman are in critical condition after being stabbed overnight on Linden Avenue in Edgewood Borough, and police detained a suspect. Dispatchers were alerted to the incident around 12:30 a.m., and the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit was called to assist Edgewood police.
According to CBS News, responding officers found the man and woman suffering from stab wounds and had them rushed to the hospital, where both remain in critical condition. Officers detained a suspect, though that person's identity has not been released. Police have not said whether the suspect and the victims knew each other or what led up to the stabbing, and detectives are now working with the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.
That review process is not optional. Under a local court rule established in 2005, all search and arrest warrants applied for in any homicide investigation undertaken in Allegheny County must be reviewed and approved by the District Attorney's Homicide Unit before filing, per the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office. If charges are eventually approved, Pennsylvania law defines aggravated assault as intentionally causing bodily injury with a deadly weapon, or attempting to cause serious bodily injury — a felony under the state's criminal code, according to the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
County Detectives Called to Assist
The Allegheny County Police Department's Homicide Unit was called to assist in the investigation.
This is not the first time county detectives have investigated a stabbing in Edgewood. In March 2022, Allegheny County Police investigated a stabbing at a GetGo in Edgewood that had occurred the prior weekend; arrests on March 24, 2022, included one suspect facing aggravated assault and conspiracy charges and a second facing simple assault and conspiracy charges, as reported by WPXI.
A Small Borough Under Renewed Scrutiny
Edgewood is a borough about six miles east of Downtown Pittsburgh. The borough has drawn outsized attention from major crime news in recent weeks; a body found near Edgewood in August forced an Amtrak hold and shut down Pittsburgh Regional Transit's East Busway in both directions, a corridor that carries thousands of daily commuters between Downtown Pittsburgh and Swissvale.
For now, the central questions in Thursday's stabbing remain unanswered. Investigators have not disclosed whether the detained suspect and the two victims knew one another, nor what circumstances led to the attack on Linden Avenue.
