El Mercat Bar de Tapas has permanently closed its Westpost restaurant in Arlington's National Landing neighborhood, just about a year after opening its doors at 1301 S. Joyce Street in Pentagon City. The Spanish tapas concept cited a mix of economic pressures, unexpected construction costs, delayed opening timelines and softer-than-expected sales as the reasons behind the shutdown.
The closure was confirmed Thursday when the restaurant announced the news on Instagram, as reported by Northern Virginia Magazine. In its statement, the restaurant did not soften the blow: “Economic challenges, unexpected construction costs, delays in opening, and slower-than-anticipated sales ultimately forced us to close our doors.” The Pentagon City location had opened in September 2025, according to ARLnow, making its run just about twelve months long.
A Second DMV Outpost That Didn't Pan Out
El Mercat's Arlington location was meant to be a showcase expansion for the brand, which is led by chef George Rodrigues alongside his wife and restaurateur partner, Wanessa Alves, according to Arlington Magazine. The Westpost space came in at 4,057 square feet with seating for 120 people, including a 24-seat bar — nearly double the footprint of the original Rockville restaurant, according to the same outlet's reporting.
Eater DC had previewed the expansion back in 2024, describing plans for the restaurant to cross state lines from Maryland into Northern Virginia in early 2025 with a space twice the size of the Rockville original. The eventual Arlington menu delivered on that bigger footprint with a bigger menu too: 32 tapas spanning meat, fish and vegetarian options priced between $8 and $18, five paellas ranging from $16 to $46, and a handful of entrees and desserts, per Arlington Magazine's account.
Rockville Restaurant Remains the Flagship
Despite the Virginia closure, El Mercat's original location remains open, according to ARLnow's report. The restaurant thanked customers and staff for their support of the Arlington location and invited them to keep visiting the original spot, per the closure statement covered by the same outlet.
Seed reporting on the closure, via The MoCo Show, notes that El Mercat encouraged patrons to continue visiting its Rockville location at 101 Gibbs Street. There is some inconsistency in the record about exactly when that Rockville restaurant first opened: Northern Virginia Magazine's reporting places chef Rodrigues's original opening in 2022, while other seed material points to January 2023. Either way, the Rockville restaurant remains the brand's sole standing location following the Arlington closure.
What Made El Mercat's Menu Stand Out

The restaurant's statement described the decision to close as not an easy one, according to reporting reviewed for this story. Beyond the reasons the restaurant listed publicly, the exact financial details behind the construction delays and sales shortfall have not been disclosed. For now, diners hoping to sample El Mercat's paellas and tapas spread will need to make the trip to Rockville, Maryland, where the original restaurant continues to operate.
