Baojue Lin was standing in his father’s kitchen making breakfast around 10:30 a.m. on September 5 when he heard his dogs barking and then gunfire outside. The 49-year-old Elk Grove man stepped out to see what was happening and was immediately struck by shotgun pellets across his face, head, shoulder and torso.
Lin drove himself to Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka for treatment after the shooting, according to KDRV. The shooting happened near a neighboring property on Karina Drive, close to County Road A-12, as reported by FOX40.
Deputies arrested 39-year-old Russell Asher of Montague in connection with the shooting. Asher told investigators he had fired multiple rounds after Lin’s dog ran toward his property line, according to the Sierra Daily News. He also claimed that Lin had fired at him with a handgun, but the account notes that the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office found no evidence to support that statement.
Investigators Recover Weapon and Spent Rounds
Deputies searched both properties and recovered Asher’s firearm along with the spent rounds believed to have struck Lin, per the same account. Lin told authorities he could not identify the shooter, though he pointed to one of two brothers living on the adjoining property as a likely suspect.
Asher was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm and battery causing great bodily harm and was booked into the Siskiyou County Jail, according to KRCR. The Sacramento Bee reported that anyone with information about the case can contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office at 530-841-2900.
What Remains Unclear
Details about Lin’s current medical condition, whether he was hospitalized beyond his initial treatment, and any booking or court information for Asher have not been made public. The identities and involvement of the second brother said to live at the adjoining property also remain unconfirmed.
