Elk Grove readers finally get their chain bookstore back Tuesday, when Barnes & Noble opens its doors inside The Village shopping center on Elk Grove Boulevard. The more than 20,000-square-foot store sits next door to Whole Foods and includes a full B&N Café, a dedicated vinyl section, and curated toys, games, and gifts.
The opening date moved up by one day from what was originally planned, according to The US Sun. A grand opening celebration is set for 9 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, per the store's own Instagram post, with store management saying the location is ready to open, celebrate with customers, and welcome them to the new bookstore. The Village itself first opened in June 2026 and totals 127,000 square feet, developed by Pappas Investments with anchor tenants Whole Foods and Barnes & Noble alongside dining options including Yard House, Shake Shack, Mendocino Farms, and Philz Coffee, according to Pappas Investments. Hoodline previously covered Shake Shack's debut at the same center.
Filling a Gap Left by Borders
Elk Grove has gone without a major national bookstore chain since Borders Books closed its 7415 Laguna Boulevard location in September 2011 amid the company's nationwide bankruptcy liquidation, according to a Barnes & Noble corporate press release. That former Borders space was later converted into a DSW shoe store. More recently, a Barnes & Noble location near Elk Grove closed in 2024, and the shuttered space sat about two miles from the new store, per the-sun.com's reporting.
In the interim, independent bookseller A Seat at the Table Books has served as the city's primary local bookshop since opening on Laguna Springs Drive in 2021. The store operates as an inclusive community third space featuring family play areas and community events, according to the California Office of the Small Business Advocate.
Signings and a Midnight Release Party
The new store's opening week is packed with programming. Author Tarah DeWitt will sign copies of Lost and Found, and Jay Asher is scheduled to sign books as well, per the-sun.com. Grace Murrow will sign copies of We Become Darkness and Ann Adams will sign copies of Racing Hearts, both on September 19. The store will also host a release party for Rebecca Yarros' Threshing Day running from 9 p.m. to midnight on September 28.
The Elk Grove location becomes the fifth Barnes & Noble in the Sacramento area, joining existing stores at Arden Fair, Citrus Heights, Roseville, and Folsom, according to the-sun.com. For comparison, the outlet also noted that Barnes & Noble opened a store in Commack on Long Island, about 54 miles east of Manhattan, this past August.
Part of a Bigger California Push
Elk Grove's store is one of eight new Barnes & Noble locations opening across California in 2026, building on earlier launches in Turlock, Clovis, and Costa Mesa, per a Barnes & Noble corporate press release. Additional California openings this year are planned for Fremont, San Marcos, Ontario, and Cupertino. Hoodline has tracked several of these moves already, including the chain's Costa Mesa reopening and its Cupertino comeback plans.
Nationally, the expansion is being driven by CEO James Daunt, who took over after private equity firm Elliott Management acquired the company in 2019. Under Daunt, Barnes & Noble is targeting roughly 60 new store openings in 2026, following 57 launches in 2024 and more than 60 in 2025, according to Business Insider. Daunt's strategy decentralizes inventory decisions, letting local staff choose which titles line their shelves rather than following a corporate mandate.
The chain has set a long-term goal of growing past 1,000 stores nationwide, up from roughly 700 today, using a flexible site format that targets footprints between 10,000 and 25,000 square feet, per the ICSC. Across Northern California, that expansion has meant reoccupying vacant suburban retail space, including a former 19,200-square-foot Party City location in Cupertino and a new site at Pacific Commons in Fremont, according to San José Spotlight.
Notably, Barnes & Noble runs without a national marketing department or advertising budget, instead leaning on organic social media trends like BookTok and community-level events to draw customers, according to Inc. Magazine. Local managers schedule their own author visits and release events rather than waiting on centralized campaigns, a pattern reflected in Elk Grove's signing lineup this month. The current growth marks a sharp reversal from more than 15 years of continuous contraction that had shrunk the chain to fewer than 600 stores by 2023, with Barnes & Noble opening more locations in 2024 alone than during the entire decade from 2009 to 2019, per Business Insider.
