A grocery store building on Asheville Highway in Inman that has sat empty for more than a decade is finally getting a new tenant. Tractor Supply plans to open a store at 11295 Asheville Highway, the former home of a Food Lion that shut its doors in 2012 and has been without a permanent occupant ever since.
The project would mark Tractor Supply's fifth location in Spartanburg County, according to the Post and Courier. The retailer is aiming for a spring 2027 opening, with a company spokesperson saying the soft opening is planned for March and the grand opening for April of that year.
Online records show that a building permit was requested to overhaul the Asheville Highway space specifically for Tractor Supply, the outlet reports. The new store is expected to bring 15 jobs to Inman, with at least half of those positions full time.
What Will Fill the Old Food Lion's Shelves
Tractor Supply is known as a farm supply store, and its shelves typically carry animal feed, chicks, and power tools rather than the groceries once sold at the site. The Inman location will also feature amenities not found in a typical grocery store, including a pet wash and a feed center, per the report.
The store's arrival would close out a long stretch of vacancy for the building. Three Food Lion stores in Spartanburg County, including the Inman location, closed in early 2012 as part of a wave of grocery closures across the Upstate at the time.
A Growing Footprint Across the Upstate
The Inman project fits into a broader pattern of expansion for the farm and ranch retailer in South Carolina, where it currently operates roughly 68 stores statewide. Among those is a location in nearby Boiling Springs, which is also listed on Tractor Supply's store locator.
With four other stores already operating in Spartanburg County, the Inman opening would deepen the chain's presence in the region even further. For residents who have watched the old Food Lion sit empty since 2012, the coming store offers a concrete timeline — and a new use — for a building that has waited a long time for its next chapter.
