A loose emu turned a stretch of the Polk Parkway into its own personal runway Saturday morning, strutting along State Road 570 near milepost 16 in Polk County before Florida Highway Patrol troopers stepped in to catch it. The flightless Australian bird was recovered, and no injuries were reported.
Troopers got the call around 8:30 a.m. after the emu was spotted wandering along the highway, according to Tampa Free Press. State troopers arrived at the scene and eventually herded the bird into the back of a Florida Department of Transportation Road Ranger vehicle.
Bird Stayed Put Until Its Owners Showed Up
Once inside the Road Ranger van, the emu remained secured until its owners arrived to retrieve it, the outlet reported. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the animal was recovered safely, closing out the morning on the Polk Parkway.
Word of the runaway bird also made the rounds on social media, where a local Threads account, Threads user @tampabay_28, noted that the flightless bird was safely recovered after being spotted walking along the Polk Parkway that Saturday morning. The post described a strange sighting with a calm resolution.
