A 12-year-old boy is in custody after allegedly approaching a 13-year-old girl near a business on Fort Weaver Road in Ewa Beach, brandishing a firearm and threatening to shoot her brother. The incident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m., and the girl later reported the encounter at school, setting off a chain of events that ended with school staff finding a gun in the boy's backpack and police taking him into custody.
According to KITV 4 Island News, the girl later reported the confrontation at school. Staff then recovered a firearm from the boy's backpack and alerted police, who located and positively identified him as the suspect.
Arrest Follows Swift School Response
The boy was arrested on charges of first-degree terroristic threatening and place to keep, per the same report. He remained in police custody pending further investigation, and no injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Police had released no additional information at the time the report was published.
The case adds to a string of recent Oahu incidents involving minors and firearms near or on school grounds. In March, a 16-year-old boy was arrested in Kapolei after allegedly being found with a handgun on a school campus, with no injuries reported, as detailed by KITV. A Pattern of Juvenile Threat Cases Statewide
Similar cases have surfaced elsewhere in the islands in recent years. In 2024, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested and charged three juveniles with first-degree terroristic threatening following a report of an online threat, according to hawaiipolice.gov. And back in 2021, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested a 13-year-old boy from Pahoa accused of threatening to bring a shotgun to school, as reported by Civil Beat.
No further details have been released about the boy's case, including the type of firearm involved or how it was obtained. Investigators have not said whether additional charges could be filed as the case moves forward.
