An 80-year-old Exeter man is facing multiple charges, including assault with intent to commit murder, after police say he called 911 himself to report striking a woman with a blackjack-type weapon during a disagreement at his home. The woman was left in serious condition and taken to the hospital, according to police.
Rhode Island State Police said Norman Landry called 911 and told police he had struck the woman with the weapon during the dispute, according to a report from CoastalABC. Troopers from the Hope Valley Barracks received the call at about 1:45 p.m. Friday and took Landry into custody at his Exeter home, per the same report.
The woman was treated at the scene by Exeter Rescue before being transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was reported to be in serious condition, the outlet reported. Details about her identity, age or relationship to Landry have not been made public.
