A 49-year-old man wanted in Colorado on felony child sex charges was arrested by federal immigration officers in Falls Church on Aug. 31, ending years of unlawful residency that began after he simply refused to leave the country when his permission expired. Jose Saul Canas-Guandique, a Salvadoran national, now sits in federal immigration custody as both a criminal case in Colorado and his own removal proceedings move forward.
According to WJLA, Canas-Guandique is wanted in Colorado on felony charges of sexual assault on a child by a person of trust, solicitation of child prostitution, and using the internet to lure a child with intent to exploit. The outlet reports he lawfully entered the United States in December 2004 with permission to remain until June 2005, then refused to leave and stayed in the country illegally for more than two decades after his authorization lapsed.
Officers with the Glenwood Springs Police Department in Colorado first arrested Canas-Guandique on March 7, 2024, per the same account. It was not until Aug. 31 of this year that ICE Washington, D.C. officers located and arrested him more than 1,500 miles away in Falls Church, Virginia — a gap between his Colorado arrest and his eventual ICE apprehension that spans more than two years.
ICE Cites Threat to Local Communities
ICE Washington, D.C. Field Office Director Robert Guadian said Canas-Guandique “represents a substantial threat to the law-abiding citizens of our Northern Virginia neighborhoods,” according to WJLA.
Per Mid Michigan Now, ICE says Canas-Guandique will remain in federal custody while his removal proceedings continue and that the agency intends to work with Colorado authorities to make sure he faces the pending criminal justice process there as well. The outlet's report did not specify further detail on how that coordination would unfold.
Possible Ties to Earlier Garfield County Case
A man identified as Jose Canas Guandique, 47 and living in Carbondale, Colorado, was named among seven suspects taken into custody during a multi-agency anti-human trafficking operation in Garfield County, according to Denver7. That report describes charges among the seven suspects ranging from internet luring of a child and soliciting for child prostitution to patronizing a prostituted child and sexual assault against a child. The dossier does not resolve whether the man named in that operation is the same person arrested in Falls Church, nor does it explain the discrepancy between the ages reported — 49 in the ICE-related coverage versus 47 in the Denver7 account.
