Word of the death came from Dorman High School Principal Joshua Dawkins, who sent a message to parents about the incident, according to Fox Carolina. Dawkins asked any students who witnessed the emergency and feel they need counseling to reach out to one of the school's mental health counselors. Dorman maintains dedicated school mental health staff, part of a broader crisis-response framework District 6 runs in partnership with local mental health agencies, according to VITAL Spartanburg.
Dawkins also announced that all home athletic events scheduled for Thursday evening were canceled following the tragedy. It's a significant disruption for a school whose sports program competes in Class AAAAA, South Carolina's largest high school athletic classification, and which claimed the 2024 Boys Cross Country State Championship. Dawkins, who is guiding the response, only recently took the reins at Dorman. He had previously served as an assistant principal at Dorman and as principal of Sanders Middle School before his appointment.
Dawkins now reports to Superintendent Dr. Ken Kiser, who oversees 14 public schools serving more than 11,000 students across Spartanburg County. Kiser has led the district through a period of rapid growth, including a $395 million no-tax-increase bond referendum that Spartanburg County School District 6 voters approved in March to fund new elementary schools and campus expansions across the fast-growing district.

Just months earlier, in February, District 6 officials created the Officer Javan King Scholarship Fund at Dorman to honor retired Officer Javan King Jr., who spent 30 years as the school's resource officer during a 40-year law enforcement career before retiring in August 2024 and dying later in 2025.
The pickup-line emergency comes even as Dorman has been celebrating milestones this year, including a Class of 2026 that earned more than $38 million in college academic and athletic scholarships.
