A fatal crash temporarily closed South County Road 39 in both directions between State Road 674 and Carlton Road in Manatee County on Saturday. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office advised drivers to use an alternate route while the closure remained in effect.
The sheriff's office later reported that all roads had reopened, allowing traffic to resume through the affected stretch. The agency's alert did not identify the person who died, the number of vehicles involved, or what caused the crash.

Separate intersection project
A separate Florida Department of Transportation District Seven project at the State Road 674 and County Road 39 intersection in Hillsborough County widened an existing shoulder to accommodate freight trucks. Construction was completed Aug. 22, 2022.
That project provides roadway-design context near one end of the reported closure, but it was in Hillsborough County and does not establish that road design, freight traffic or any other condition contributed to Saturday's crash.
What remains unknown
The sheriff's office has not released additional details about the victim, injuries, citations, vehicles involved or the cause of the crash. The alert also did not specify exactly when the closure began or when the roadway reopened beyond the agency's subsequent update.
