Earlier Fatal Crashes on South Pleasantburg Drive
This is not the first time this stretch of road has made headlines for a deadly wreck. Hoodline previously reported on a pedestrian killed near South Pleasantburg Drive and Impact Drive on September 9, 2026, after a crash early Wednesday; whether the driver involved stayed at the scene remained unknown. Just months earlier, on March 28, a 64-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed around midnight on the 1200 block of the same road, per the Joye Law Firm.

The nearby I-85 interchange has its own troubling numbers. Between 2019 and 2023, that stretch of interstate through Greenville County recorded 2,760 speed-related crashes, with more than half of all collisions involving speeding — the highest concentration of speed-related crashes on any highway segment in the state, the same analysis found.
State Working On Signal Upgrades
The South Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a contract in December 2024 for Type II traffic signal upgrades along S.C. 291 in Greenville County, with a scheduled completion date of September 30, 2026 — just days after this latest fatal crash. Whether that project would have any bearing on safety at the crash site near I-85 remains unclear.
Thursday's death follows two other fatal pedestrian crashes on South Pleasantburg Drive. The Greenville County Coroner's Office had not yet identified the person killed Thursday, and it remains unknown whether South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers plan to issue citations or file charges as the investigation continues.
