An apartment fire in the 27900 block of Pacific Highway South in Federal Way prompted 40 residents to leave Thursday afternoon. The blaze broke out just before 3 p.m.; firefighters kept it from nearby units, and occupants were asked to vacate for at least one night.

Investigation and Available Red Cross Support
KIRO 7 reported that the fire department requested a fire investigator. No findings on how the fire started have been released yet.
In the meantime, Red Cross resources and a shelter were available to displaced residents, the outlet reported.
A Pattern Along Pacific Highway South
This is not the first time a fire along Pacific Highway South has forced mass displacement in Federal Way. In June, a two-alarm fire at a motel in the 33200 block of the same road displaced 35 residents and required similar Red Cross emergency shelter intervention, as Hoodline reported at the time. Both fires prompted residents to evacuate.
Federal Way has seen worse. In July 2022, an overheated power strip ignited a three-alarm fire at the Terra Apartments on the 35200 block of 21st Avenue SW, damaging 36 units and displacing nearly 100 residents, according to iHeart. That fire also left one firefighter treated for heat exhaustion.
What remains unresolved is how the fire started.
