Uptown Charlotte is turning into a showcase of color, music and dance this weekend as the Festival of India returns for its annual two-day run. The outdoor portion of the celebration is free to attend, while shows inside Belk Theater cost $5 per ticket, according to organizers who joined Queen City News to preview the event.
The festival is presented by the India Association of Charlotte, which describes it as an annual celebration of India's rich cultural heritage. As reported by Queen City News, asset manager Ashish Mishra, kid activity team lead Tejal Kothar, dance instructor Anu Shenoy and several dancers previewed the weekend's offerings ahead of the event.
Classical Dance, Bollywood and a Live Wedding on Center Stage
The festival's main stage is set to feature a non-stop lineup ranging from classical dance to high-energy Bollywood spectacles, per the same account. Organizers say the shows will include classical styles such as Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and Odissi, along with folk dances from several Indian states, according to the India Association of Charlotte.
Center stage will also host a live Indian wedding ceremony, alongside vendors selling art, crafts, clothing and jewelry, the association notes. Young performers get their own spotlight too, with a Charlotte Indian Idol singing competition and a live kids art competition for creators ages 4 to 17, who will receive surprise themes on the spot.
Outdoor Marketplace Fills Tryon Street
Both days of the festival are set to take place at Belk Theater and on Tryon Street in Uptown, at 130 N. Tryon St., at the corner of Fifth Street and North Tryon Street, according to Blumenthal Arts. A separate listing from the Charlotte International Arts Festival states that day two takes place at Ballantyne's Backyard, but that listing is explicitly for September 20, 2025, not the 2026 event.
The outdoor portion is expected to include regional cuisine, jewelry, traditional attire and cultural exhibits, plus an art gallery featuring more than 100 local artists, per Blumenthal Arts. Interactive experiences on offer include henna tattoos, saree draping and turban tying, the venue's listing adds.
Symphony Performance Caps Off the Weekend
Tickets now include entry for both days of the festival as well as the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra performance scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m., according to Blumenthal Arts. That Fusion Orchestra performance, presented in partnership with the Charlotte Symphony, will unfold on the Belk Theater stage.
The concert is billed as the festival's culminating event, featuring music by A.R. Rahman alongside contemporary works by Reena Esmail and Kanniks Kannikeswaran, with vocalist Vidita Kanniks, according to the Charlotte Symphony. For families looking for a similar celebration closer to home, a Regional Festival of India is also listed at Stumptown Park in the Town of Matthews, per the India Association of Charlotte's events page.
