Thick smoke and visible flames poured from a parking structure at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to video captured Wednesday afternoon. The footage captured intense fire activity at the structure, though the extent of any damage and whether patients or staff were affected had not yet been confirmed.
The video was obtained by WISN 12 News, whose crew was en route to the scene as the station worked to gather more details. WISN said it had reached out to both the Wauwatosa Fire Department and Froedtert Hospital for further information on the fire, and digital content manager Taylor Lang was credited with helping bring the footage to air.
Froedtert Hospital is no stranger to high-stakes infrastructure demands. The 781-bed academic medical center houses eastern Wisconsin's only adult Level I Trauma Center and logs nearly 70,000 emergency department visits a year, according to Froedtert & MCW. That volume makes clear vehicular access to the campus a pressing concern anytime an incident threatens to disrupt it.
Not the First Parking Structure Fire on Campus
This isn't the first time a blaze has broken out in a Froedtert parking structure. Back in January 2019, a vehicle fire on the second floor of a hospital parking structure forced a temporary lockdown of the main lobby before firefighters put out the flames, with no injuries reported at the time, per FOX6 News Milwaukee.
The hospital's parking landscape has changed significantly since then. Froedtert opened Parking – Blue in September 2025, a nine-story, 2,400-stall structure on North 92nd Street built to serve incoming patients and visitors as part of a broader campus expansion, the hospital system's own materials note. The structure includes EV charging stations and a skybridge connecting directly into the hospital.
That garage was also designed with a custom ventilated glass rainscreen and metal facade, engineered by Eppstein Uhen Architects to maintain natural airflow throughout the multi-level structure. Open architectural facades like this one are intended to eliminate the need for mechanical exhaust systems while still allowing daylight into the garage, a design detail that can influence how smoke and heat move through a structure during a fire.
Why Garage Fires Pose Unique Risks
Parking garage fires are more common than many drivers realize. U.S. Fire Administration data cited by Consulting-Specifying Engineer indicates roughly 650 parking garage fires occur nationwide each year, causing an estimated $8 million in property damage and about 15 injuries annually. Vehicle fires in enclosed or multi-tier structures can pose serious hazards.
Modern building codes have adapted to those risks. Section 903.2.10 of the 2021 International Building Code requires automatic fire sprinkler systems in open parking garages once fire areas exceed 48,000 gross square feet, closing older exemptions that had let open-air structures skip sprinklers altogether. Wisconsin's administrative building codes also include a section on standpipe systems for open parking structures.
Wauwatosa's Response Capacity
The Wauwatosa Fire Department would be expected to respond to an incident on the Froedtert campus.
