A fire tore through the playground at Bellevue Park in Louisville's Beechmont neighborhood before sunrise, leaving behind scorched equipment and a South Louisville community mourning a space where kids played. The Louisville Fire Department got the call around 2:54 a.m. Monday, and while crews brought the blaze under control, they could not save the playground itself.
The Louisville Metro Arson Bureau said a passerby dialed 911 to report the fire shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday into Monday, and caution tape had already gone up around the destroyed equipment by the time the sun came up, according to WDRB. Investigators are still working to determine whether the fire was set intentionally, and per WLKY, arson investigators have not yet determined the cause. Bellevue Park sits at 4711 Bellevue Avenue and has been a public city park since Louisville acquired it in 1927, according to Louisville Metro Government, which puts the modest 1.14-acre green space among the neighborhood's longest-standing gathering spots.
A Playground Where Kids Learned to Swing
For families nearby, the loss is personal. Leah Hughes said the playground was where her daughter learned to use the slide and swings, and she expects many neighborhood children will be disappointed and hurt by its destruction, the station's report notes. Adam Lieberg, a nearby resident who brings his son to the park almost daily, said the space is well used by families during the day, but described a starkly different picture after dark.
Lieberg said there's evidence the park gets used illegally at night, and he reported finding needles, broken glass and excrement at the park alongside the burned-down playground. He called the fire a willful destruction of a community resource and is now pushing for nighttime sweeps and foot patrols to prevent further damage, per the same account from WLKY reporter Addie Meiners.
A Familiar Pattern Across South Louisville
This isn't the first playground fire to hit South Louisville. In April 2021, an early-morning fire damaged some playground components at nearby Wyandotte Park, less than two miles north of Beechmont, where Metro Parks officials said an accelerant was likely used, according to WDRB. In July 2019, an arson fire completely destroyed the playground and scorched surrounding trees at Blake Elementary School in nearby Okolona, with the Louisville Metro Arson Bureau leading that investigation, as reported by WHAS11.
Just across the river, police in New Albany, Indiana, arrested a 19-year-old on felony arson charges in February 2023 after a fire destroyed playground equipment at Bicknell Park, with quick coordination between police and fire units leading to a same-day arrest, WDRB reported at the time. Whether the Bellevue Park case follows a similar path remains to be seen, since arson investigators are still reviewing the scene to determine if accelerants or deliberate ignition were involved.
What Comes Next for Bellevue Park
Louisville Parks and Recreation intends to rebuild the playground as soon as possible but has not set a timeline for the work, according to WLKY. Any rebuild will unfold against a tight budget backdrop: Louisville spends 47% less per acre, at $1,949 compared with a national average of $4,169, per data cited in WDRB's reporting.
For now, the cause of the Bellevue Park fire remains under investigation, and neighbors like Lieberg are left hoping the outcome brings both accountability and a safer, better-watched park.
