A pedestrian died Monday night after being struck by a driver who fled the scene at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, prompting Las Vegas police to shut down a stretch of the busy East Las Vegas corridor. Officers were called to the intersection shortly after 8:45 p.m., and the closure stretched from Stewart Avenue all the way to Charleston Boulevard while investigators worked the scene.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the fatal hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. As KSNV reported, one person died in the crash and drivers were asked to avoid the area around Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue while the road remained closed.
Whoever was behind the wheel did not stick around. Under Nevada law, that decision carries steep consequences: NRS 484E.010 classifies failing to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in bodily injury or death as a Category B felony, with a mandatory prison term of 2 to 20 years and fines between $2,000 and $5,000, according to Justia Law. Nevada courts are barred from granting probation or suspending sentences for felony hit-and-run convictions, the same source notes.
A Corner With a Grim History
This is not the first time this stretch of Nellis Boulevard has turned deadly for someone on foot. Almost exactly one year earlier, in September 2025, another pedestrian was struck and killed in the 400 block of North Nellis Boulevard near Stewart Avenue by a speeding driver, according to the Review-Journal's earlier reporting.
Just months before that, in February 2025, an 86-year-old pedestrian was struck on Stewart Avenue just east of Nellis Boulevard by an impaired driver and died from his injuries the following month, marking the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's 46th traffic fatality of that year, per the department's own accounting. That crash preceded Monday night's fleeing-driver crash.
