Accounts of the incident at Leo’s Steak Shop in Folcroft differ on whether the suspect removed about $60 from the tip jar or left with the jar itself. 6abc Philadelphia reported that surveillance video showed a man taking the cash, counting it and putting it in his pocket, while Newport Dispatch reported that police described a man in a red hat taking the entire jar. Both accounts place the theft at the restaurant on Chester Pike on Monday, with 6abc reporting that it happened around 9 p.m. near closing time. 6abc Philadelphia and Newport Dispatch did not include a separate police statement resolving the difference.
Employee asked for the money back
Jaquan Quarles was working near the counter and had interacted with the man before the theft, according to 6abc Philadelphia. Quarles did not immediately realize what had happened. Afterward, he asked the man to return the money. The tips were intended to be divided among the restaurant’s employees at the end of the night.
Customers offer to replenish the tips
The reports said customers responded by putting money back into the jar or planning to contribute more. FOX 29 Philadelphia reported that Lystra Morrison intended to add extra money, while Yahoo News reported that other regulars had already helped refill the jar. FOX 29 Philadelphia and Yahoo News attributed those responses to customer accounts.
Police continue seeking information
Folcroft police are seeking help identifying the man and a woman who appeared to be with him, according to the cited reports. The man and woman had not been identified, and no arrest had been reported. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Folcroft Police Department.
