Nearly four years after a 4-month-old was found unresponsive inside a Zack Circle apartment, the child's father has been sentenced to prison. Christian Mark McGill, an active-duty Marine at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026.
The case dates back to December 22, 2022, when Jacksonville police responded to a medical call at the Zach Circle apartment, according to WCTI. Officers arrived to find the 4-month-old unresponsive, and the child was later pronounced dead at the scene. WCTI reported that McGill pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse and was sentenced to prison on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026.
McGill's arrest came after the investigation. The same WCTI report states McGill was arrested on December 30, 2022, eight days after the child's death, and NBC News also reported that he was arrested on December 30.
Marine Corps Ties and a Multi-Agency Investigation
WITN identified McGill as the child's father and an active-duty Marine, and reported he was being held in the Onslow County Jail under no bond. The outlet also reported that the death investigation was being conducted jointly by the Jacksonville Police Department, the District Attorney's Office and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
NBC News reported at the time that McGill was charged with an open count of murder and processed into the Onslow County jail under no bond.
