A rowdy Fort Worth beer garden known for its live music stage, retractable roof, and smash burgers may be gearing up to open its first location outside North Texas at San Antonio's The Rim. Brainstorm Shelter, the hospitality group behind Second Rodeo Brewing, has filed a request for proposal for work on a new outpost inside a 15,500-square-foot rental space at the far-North Side shopping center.
The filing, first reported by CultureMap San Antonio, did not name a shopping center or address. CultureMap said an undated property brochure lists Second Rodeo in the former home of The Rustic at 17619 La Cantera Parkway. Nothing has been finalized publicly.
The Rustic operated at that address for six years before closing in May 2024. Owners said TxDOT highway construction at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange hindered access to the venue, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The venue had been co-owned by country musician Pat Green and hospitality group FreeRange Concepts.
FreeRange Concepts Exits San Antonio
FreeRange Concepts didn't stop at The Rustic. The Dallas-based company completely exited the San Antonio market in August 2025 after closing its two remaining entertainment spots, Bowl & Barrel and The General Public, following a decade of operation, per MySA's reporting.
In the interim, Texas entertainment producer Power Gate Presents temporarily repurposed the space to host a pop-up called That Venue at The Rim, a concert, nightlife, and event space, the SA Current reported. The Rim itself spans 1,229,470 square feet, according to Big V Property Group's property listing.
What Second Rodeo Would Bring
Second Rodeo Brewing was created by Jason Boso, the same operator behind Truck Yard and, previously, Twisted Root Burger Co., the Dallas burger chain that closed its original Deep Ellum flagship after 20 years, as Hoodline reported in prior coverage. The brand debuted at Mule Alley in the Fort Worth Stockyards in September 2021, according to Beer in Big D.
The flagship features on-site brewing and an open-air retractable roof that can shelter an enclosed patio. Any San Antonio location would likely mirror the Fort Worth format: a music stage, dance floor, yard games, and an indoor/outdoor layout designed to shelter patrons during warmer months.
The food and drink menu at existing locations includes smash burgers, pretzel bun hot dogs, Philly cheesesteaks, and wings, alongside cocktails, frozen drinks, and house-infused spirits served as shots. Brainstorm Shelter is also working on a second Second Rodeo outpost in Frisco.
Confirmation Still Pending
Commercial real estate firm Weitzman lists San Antonio as one of Second Rodeo's markets, but a representative for the firm has not confirmed the specific location, telling CultureMap only that the company is working on several opportunities with numerous hurdles to overcome. Brainstorm Shelter has not publicly announced the San Antonio beer garden and did not respond to CultureMap's request for comment.
The Rim has seen tenant turnover, including The Rustic's closure. Should Second Rodeo's plans clear the numerous hurdles that remain, the brewery would join that reshuffling as one of the largest entertainment tenants to fill the void left by The Rustic's exit.
