Francis Lum turns 90 on October 2, and he remains the oldest player on Oahu’s Makule League roster, according to Hawaii News Now. The Kailua resident pitches or catches on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The station reports that he has played in the league for 30 years.
His return to the diamond followed a vehicle collision in Kailua that led to emergency trauma surgery, Hawaii News Now reported. The account documents Lum’s own persistence, not a measure of how common it is for older adults to play softball.
A longer local league history
Oahu’s senior-softball history reaches back decades. Oahu Senior Softball’s history describes the Makua Ali’i Senior Softball League’s Honolulu period as running from 1975 to 2003, followed by a Central Oahu period beginning in fall 2003. That history provides local context; it does not, by itself, establish that the league’s timeline is the same as Lum’s Makule League or explain his individual playing history.
Senior softball activity also connects islands through tournaments. Separately from Lum’s Oahu league, Maui Senior Softball says its six-month season ends with a statewide tournament bringing together teams from Maui, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. The Maui organization’s description offers a broader picture of the sport’s reach, but does not indicate that Lum or his league participates.
