Next Wednesday, a free-lunch truck will serve sandwiches created by chef Yara Herrera from dishes selected by a giant spinning wheel. Ziploc and Too Good To Go are bringing the Wheel of Sandwiches for a one-day giveaway.
The event, called Surprise Seconds, is a collaboration between Ziploc, Too Good To Go and Herrera, according to Time Out. The campaign encourages people to make more use of food they already have instead of throwing it away.
At the truck, participants will spin a giant wheel to select a classic dish. Herrera will then use the result as inspiration for a new sandwich.
How the Wheel Picks Your Lunch
Herrera will reinterpret the selected dish as a handheld sandwich. The wheel’s options include dishes associated with Murray’s Cheese, Ajo y Oregano, Mahmoud’s Corner and Hellbender, giving the menu a lineup of New York restaurant inspirations. The event description does not establish that the sandwiches will be made from actual leftovers.
The giveaway is part of a broader campaign about making use of food people have saved, not a claim that the truck’s sandwiches use leftover ingredients. Ziploc and Too Good To Go also plan to share recipe ideas, storage tips and other leftover inspiration online, according to PR Newswire.
How NYC Handles Food Scraps
The giveaway is separate from city waste rules. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says its food-donation and food-scraps law excludes New York City, which has a local law requiring food-scrap diversion. Separately, the New York City Department of Sanitation reported that the City Council passed Intro 31, authorizing DSNY to require businesses producing food or other organic waste to separate it for composting. The measure also calls for private carters to provide information about donating excess edible food to establishments receiving organic-waste collection. For residents, DSNY says all New Yorkers are required to compost through the city’s mandatory curbside program.
When to Show Up
The Surprise Seconds truck’s location will be announced later, with the giveaway scheduled for next Wednesday.
