A man wanted for an armed robbery at a northeast Fresno AutoZone was taken into custody Tuesday night after an hourslong SWAT standoff forced police to shut down East Gettysburg Avenue. The arrest capped an operation that began that morning when the suspect allegedly brandished a handgun and stole merchandise from the store, then fled to a nearby residence where he refused to come out for hours.
The standoff traces back to a reported armed robbery around 11:10 a.m. Tuesday at the AutoZone located at 3102 East Gettysburg Avenue, according to Cedar News, which reported that a man brandished a handgun before stealing merchandise from the store. Fresno Police Lt. Michael Pierce told KMPH that the suspect was wanted for armed robbery and was believed to be armed as officers converged on the area.
Undercover officers eventually spotted a vehicle matching the suspect's car parked in the backyard of a home on East Gettysburg Avenue, per the same Cedar News account. Police then deployed an aerial drone to track the man as he entered the residence, and negotiators reportedly spent several hours trying to make contact with him before SWAT officers assumed tactical command of the scene near East Gettysburg Avenue and First Street.
Hours-Long Standoff Shuts Down a Northeast Fresno Street
As the standoff dragged on Tuesday, KMPH reported that SWAT officers had surrounded the home and that police did not know whether anyone else was inside with the suspect. Police had not released additional details about the robbery or the suspect's identity as of that evening's report, which included photos of SWAT personnel gathering near the residence.
The police response forced the full closure of East Gettysburg Avenue between First and Fresno streets as of 7:52 p.m. Tuesday, according to a report shared by KMPH-TV on Facebook. The closure barred vehicular access to the block.
The suspect was ultimately taken into custody that night, Cedar News reported, resolving a standoff that had stretched for hours after the morning robbery. It remains unclear whether police recovered a weapon or any stolen AutoZone merchandise inside the home.
Fresno PD's Growing Aerial Arsenal
The department has a Drone First Responder program.
That aerial capability expanded further in March, when the Fresno Police Department acquired a tactical police helicopter for the first time in more than two decades, giving ground units another layer of perimeter monitoring during high-risk barricades and pursuits. What the Suspect Could Face Under California Law
If formally charged and convicted, the suspect would face serious exposure under California's robbery statute. Penal Code Section 211 classifies commercial store holdups like the AutoZone incident as second-degree robbery, carrying a state prison term of 2, 3, or 5 years, according to legal analysis from Wallin & Klarich.
Because the robbery allegedly involved a handgun, the suspect could also face California's so-called 10-20-Life enhancement. Under Penal Code Section 12022.53, personally using a firearm during a felony robbery can add a consecutive 10-year enhancement to any base sentence, although judges may strike or dismiss the enhancement in the interest of justice; firing the weapon carries a 20-year enhancement, per an explanation from the Shouse Law Group.
It is unclear whether commercial robberies like the one at the AutoZone fall within any specific task force's focus. Police have not released the suspect's identity or announced what charges, if any, the District Attorney's Office intends to file.
