A Fresno, California, barber testified that she did not see her client holding a gun but believed he must have pulled the trigger from beneath his barber's cape, in testimony describing the chaos that left a 44-year-old father dead and two others wounded inside Los Viejones Barbershop. The shooting happened April 19, 2025, at the shop near Belmont and Van Ness avenues, where Jampier Quintero was waiting with two of his children and two friends.
Barber Dalia Duenas, who was cutting 18-year-old defendant Kobe Chantharangsy's hair at the time, testified that two unidentified men in their twenties walked into the shop before the shooting and went straight to her client, according to the Fresno Bee. She said the men asked Chantharangsy where he was from, and that the way they held their waistbands made her believe they were armed. Moments later, she testified, she believed Chantharangsy must have pulled the trigger from underneath his cape, firing at a rival gang member sitting one booth away.
Gunfire Erupts, Then Returns
Duenas testified that one of the two strangers who had approached Chantharangsy fired back into the barbershop as he fled the scene, the report notes. She said she ran to a back room once the gunfire started, and that she had omitted the returning gunfire from earlier interviews because she was in shock at the time. She also testified that she had never before seen anyone die in front of her.
When the shooting stopped, the barbershop floor was covered with blood, and Duenas and another customer applied pressure to the wounded as they waited for help, per the same account. The shop was left empty in the aftermath. Quintero, according to the outlet, had been getting a haircut the day before Easter when the gunfire began.
Conflicting Accounts of Quintero's Death
Accounts of exactly where and when Quintero died diverge. The Fresno Bee reported in one story that the gunfire killed Quintero inside Los Viejones Barbershop, while a separate Fresno Bee report described the 44-year-old father being gunned down in the barbershop parking lot before later dying. ABC7 reported that Quintero was shot and killed on April 19, the day of the shooting, while KSEE24/YourCentralValley reported that Quintero died a day later, on Easter, after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Two other people were shot in the incident: a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old whom police identified as the intended targets, according to ABC30. Both were treated and released from the hospital, ABC30 separately reported. In the immediate aftermath, investigators said they had collected some surveillance video from the scene but that it had not helped identify the shooter.
Murder and Attempted Murder Charges Filed
Chantharangsy is now charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting. He attended a preliminary hearing in Department 60, where Duenas's testimony was given. During that testimony, Chantharangsy reportedly said the rival gang member involved was from the Lewis Street gang, and Duenas testified that she believed the rival gang member may have had something to do with the earlier death of Chantharangsy's cousin.
Quintero was identified as the man killed in the shooting, a bystander caught in gunfire meant for someone else while he waited with his children and friends for a haircut. The competing accounts of where and when he died remain unresolved in public reporting, but the core outcome is not in dispute: a family lost a father at a neighborhood barbershop, and the case against Chantharangsy is now moving through the courts.
