A pedestrian was hospitalized with serious injuries early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle on N Frederick Avenue in Montgomery County, prompting police to shut down all southbound lanes for hours with no clear timeline for reopening. Montgomery County Police reported the crash happened around 3:40 a.m. near Christopher Avenue, and the driver involved stayed at the scene.
Officers blocked off all southbound lanes on N Frederick Avenue between Watkins Mill Road and Christopher Avenue while they investigated, according to DC News Now. The man struck was taken to the hospital, and as of Thursday morning it remained unclear when the closed stretch of roadway would reopen to traffic.
A Corridor With a Troubling Recent History
Thursday's crash landed on a stretch of Route 355 that has seen repeated severe collisions in recent weeks. A 61-year-old man was struck and killed by a BMW driver near North Frederick Avenue and Professional Drive on August 28, according to FOX 5 DC. And just eight days before Thursday's pedestrian strike, a two-vehicle collision flipped a car at Route 355 and Watkins Mill Road — the exact northern boundary where police closed traffic following Thursday's crash.
The pattern stretches back further still. In May 2025, a 61-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle at that same Watkins Mill Road and Route 355 intersection, forcing a multi-hour closure during the police investigation, per the earlier Hoodline report on the September rollover crash. That stretch of Route 355 carries a posted 40 mph speed limit through Gaithersburg's commercial corridor, where multi-lane suburban traffic interfaces with major retail centers and medical facilities.
Why This Stretch of 355 Keeps Showing Up
The recurring crashes are not happening in isolation. The Shady Grove Road segment from MD 355 to I-270 is identified as part of Montgomery County's Vision Zero High Injury Network, a framework identifying corridors with elevated severe and fatal crash risk, according to a Montgomery Planning story map. County Vision Zero officials reported in July 2025 that targeted infrastructure improvements and enforcement had reduced serious and fatal crashes on High Injury Network corridors by 28 percent compared to pre-2020 levels, per The MoCo Show.
Even so, high-volume suburban arterials like this one remain vulnerable. Montgomery County recorded 61 pedestrian-involved crashes during January and February 2026 alone, resulting in two fatalities and six suspected serious injuries, according to county government data. That local pressure comes even as statewide numbers have improved: Maryland pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities dropped 33 percent in 2025, falling from 173 in 2024 to 116 in 2025, as overall statewide motor vehicle deaths reached decade-low levels, per the Office of Governor Wes Moore.
What Maryland Law Requires of Drivers
Under Maryland Transportation Code § 21-502, drivers must come to a complete stop for pedestrians crossing in marked or unmarked crosswalks on the driver's half of the roadway. Drivers who cause an accident by failing to stop face up to two months in prison and a $1,000 fine, according to Justia Law's summary of the statute. It remains unclear whether Thursday's crash occurred within a crosswalk, and Montgomery County Police have not detailed the specific circumstances that led to the collision.
The county has a Pedestrian Safety Program aimed at curbing crashes like these.
