A man suffered life-threatening injuries Monday night after being struck by a vehicle at West Diamond Avenue and the ramp to southbound Interstate 270 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Montgomery County police responded just before 7:30 p.m. and found a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle, while the driver involved stayed at the scene, according to police.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews transported the man to a hospital, per spokesperson Pete Piringer. As reported by DC News Now, officials have not said what caused the crash. Police blocked some lanes in the area to traffic that night, according to FOX 5 DC.
Other Serious Crashes in the Area
In May, 25-year-old motorcyclist Roger Gustavo Pineda Cardona was killed when his vehicle struck the rear of a Toyota Camry that was turning onto the highway, according to Gaithersburg Patch. The driver of the car in that incident also stayed at the scene, the outlet's report notes.
The corridor has seen other tragedy this year as well. A 56-year-old pedestrian, Brian Roy Longaberger, was killed in a hit-and-run at Muddy Branch Road and West Diamond Avenue, a crash that led investigators to arrest suspect Josue David Carranza Castellon at Newark Liberty International Airport as he allegedly tried to flee to Honduras, per MyMCMedia. Another Severe Pedestrian Crash
A pedestrian was seriously hurt after being struck around 3:40 a.m. along North Frederick Avenue, also known as Route 355, in Gaithersburg. That driver remained on scene, Hoodline reported in its earlier coverage of the crash.
West Diamond Avenue is designated as Maryland Route 117, a state-maintained arterial that carries roughly 44,000 vehicles daily near its I-270 interchange, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. That volume helps explain why a single collision at the ramp can trigger network-wide backups.
Safety Upgrades and Legal Hurdles
The City of Gaithersburg has advanced design plans this year for a 1-mile, 10-foot-wide shared-use path along West Diamond Avenue between NIST and Muddy Branch Road, intended to separate pedestrians and cyclists from heavy arterial traffic near I-270, according to the City of Gaithersburg. The project has received state bikeways grant funding, though the long-term upgrade does little to address the interchange's immediate risks.
Whether the pedestrian in Monday's crash was in a crosswalk, and whether visibility or speed played a role, remains unclear, and officials have not said if charges will be filed against the driver who stayed at the scene.
Any civil claims that follow would face a steep hurdle: Maryland is one of only four states that still enforces strict contributory negligence, meaning an injured pedestrian found even 1 percent at fault can be barred entirely from financial recovery, per Price Benowitz LLP.
