A family-owned steel building manufacturer from Georgia is putting down roots in Pickens County, with plans to construct a 96,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at 180 Ann Drive in Liberty. Tyson Steel Building Products expects the $15.15 million project to create approximately 20 jobs, with operations slated to come online in spring 2027.
The announcement, first reported by Greenville Business Magazine, marks the company's first physical plant in South Carolina after serving the state from its Georgia headquarters. The 10-acre site adds another dimension to the project. South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III said, per the same report, that Tyson Steel's investment in Pickens County reflects the capabilities of South Carolina's skilled workforce.
A Highway 123 Site Built for Visibility
The Ann Drive property offers frontage along U.S. Highway 123, according to a listing from Showcase and RE/MAX Results Commercial. The site sits directly across from Alliance Park/Pickens County Industrial Park and is contiguous with Alliance Industrial Park. A Realmo page lists a different Liberty property for sale at $374,000; it does not establish the Ann Drive property's asking price or an average sale figure.
At the new facility, Tyson Steel will design, install, and produce comprehensive components for pre-engineered metal buildings serving residential, commercial, and agricultural customers, per the Greenville Business Magazine report. Fifty Years, Two Generations, and a Wildlife Museum
Tyson Steel traces its roots to 1976, when James L. Tyson founded the company, which reaches its 50th year in operation in 2026. The family-owned company continues its operations from Georgia. The company's corporate office remains in Doerun, Georgia, from which it operates.
That Georgia headquarters complex holds an unusual bit of corporate flavor: the Tyson Steel Wildlife Museum, a public exhibit displaying exotic and local animals situated right alongside the company's fabrication plant, according to Explore Georgia. It's a detail that underscores how deeply the family business is woven into its small-town Georgia home, even as it now expands into a new state.
Part of a Bigger Pickens County Trend
Tyson Steel's arrival adds to a run of manufacturing investment in Liberty and Pickens County. In September 2025, plastics manufacturer Peabody Engineering announced a $9.2 million expansion adding 20 jobs at its Financial Boulevard facility in Liberty, citing the region's low operational costs and skilled labor pool, according to the Office of Governor Henry McMaster. Peabody had a facility in Liberty before the expansion.
Pickens County has also landed larger-scale advanced manufacturing wins in recent years. Global defense contractor FN America selected Liberty in April 2023 for a $33 million, 100,000-square-foot production plant projected to create 176 jobs, the South Carolina Department of Commerce reported at the time. Statewide, structural steel is part of South Carolina's manufacturing sector. Equipment and structural metal components manufacturing is also part of the state's industrial base.
