A burglary suspect remains at large after leading Los Angeles police on a chase that ended with a crash inside the Glendale Galleria parking structure and a carjacking, according to Glendale police. Officers say the man was involved in a collision, then carjacked a victim's vehicle and remained at large, leaving investigators to piece together what happened.
Chase Began on the 101, Ended in a Mall Garage
The pursuit started around 9:17 p.m. Thursday, when Los Angeles Police Department officers began chasing the suspect near the northbound 101 Freeway in Elysian Park, police said. As reported by Los Angeles Daily News, the chase eventually funneled into downtown Glendale, where the suspect led officers to the third floor of the Galleria's parking structure. By the time he reached the Galleria, the suspect was behind the wheel of a gray Hyundai Elantra with no license plates, per the Daily News account. He crashed into another vehicle inside the parking structure, then carjacked a victim's car and fled the scene, according to Glendale police. The Los Angeles Police Department officers involved in the initial pursuit were chasing a 34-year-old man, though he has not been publicly identified.
Suspect Ditched Car, Changed Clothes Before Disappearing
The victim was able to ping her cell phone, which had been left inside the carjacked vehicle, and told police it was pinging from the 300 block of North Pass Avenue in Burbank.
Glendale and Burbank officers recovered both the carjacked vehicle and the victim's phone at that location, which sits in Burbank's Magnolia Park district near the city's media studios, according to property records reviewed via Compass. Police returned the vehicle and phone to the victim. More than a dozen officers searched the Galleria parking structure in the aftermath, but the suspect was not located. Los Angeles police say they know his identity, though as of the Daily News report he remained at large.
A Sprawling Mall With a History of Drawing Fleeing Suspects
The Glendale Galleria, located at 100 W. Broadway, includes a connected 12-story, 138,000-square-foot office building with access to more than 200 retail stores, according to real estate listings on LoopNet. The property is owned and managed by Brookfield Properties. Its scale isn't the only reason it keeps turning up in police pursuits — in June 2018, a high-speed chase stemming from a Tarzana residential burglary similarly ended inside the Galleria's parking structure, resulting in one arrest and two suspects who fled, as reported at the time by CBS Los Angeles.
Glendale police have said their Downtown Policing Unit and Real Time Intelligence Center maintain dedicated surveillance over the Galleria and surrounding retail corridors specifically to track stolen vehicles and fleeing suspects, coordinating real-time camera feeds with officers on patrol. That infrastructure didn't stop this suspect from slipping away, but it echoes other recent enforcement activity in the area — Hoodline reported in an August task force operation that resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect wanted on multiple grand theft and organized retail theft cases at the same mall.
What the Suspect Could Face if Caught
A July 2025 report cited a 22% drop in burglaries, crediting increased officer staffing and proactive enforcement in commercial districts. Whether that trend holds, this case adds a violent chapter to the city's downtown retail corridor.
If caught, the suspect could face charges stemming from the alleged carjacking and police pursuit. For now, the man remains unaccounted for, and Glendale police have not announced any updates on his whereabouts.
