A 340-apartment affordable housing community opened its doors in Glendale this week, giving seniors, families and property staff a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom homes just steps from Fremont Park. Pioneer Village, located at 515 Pioneer Drive, held its grand opening on Tuesday, and organizers say the project is now the largest affordable housing complex in the city's history.
The opening was celebrated with fanfare, according to the Daily News, which reported the community officially opened its doors on Tuesday. Representatives from the City of Glendale, National CORE and Linc Housing all attended the grand opening, according to the seed reporting from WhatNow. Built over three and a half years, the property spans 2.8 acres near the 210 Freeway and was described by National CORE as the largest construction development the organization, Linc Housing and the city have undertaken together.
Demand for the units was steep. More than 7,500 unique applications were submitted for Pioneer Village's apartments, per the same National CORE account. The complex includes 92 homes reserved for low-income seniors ages 62 and older, 245 homes for families, and three apartments set aside for onsite property staff, with rents generally affordable to households earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income.

Pioneer Village is a joint development involving Linc Housing, National CORE and the City of Glendale, according to Linc Housing. Amenities Built for Long-Term Living
Each apartment comes equipped with air conditioning, electric heating, a patio or balcony, a dishwasher, a microwave and all-electric appliances, according to the original reporting. The community offers more than 5,800 square feet of indoor community space, including community rooms, kitchens, computer labs and a gym, National CORE's announcement noted.
Outdoor amenities include playgrounds, community gardens, courtyards, barbecue and picnic areas, rooftop decks and a walking path. Parking comes via a two-level subterranean garage with 342 spaces, including 35 electric-vehicle-ready stalls, and the property is designed to meet LEED Gold standards from the U.S. Green Building Council, though certification itself has not been confirmed.
Location and Support Services
The site sits within walking distance of Fremont Park and the Glendale Beeline Bus Route 5 stop at Doran and Pacific, according to National CORE's community page for Pioneer Village. A pedestrian path also connects the property directly to Fremont Park, per the original article.
Linc Housing's resident services team will provide nutrition and exercise classes, social activities and supportive services intended to help residents stay connected and access community resources. The 340-unit project adds to a broader tally in the city: the Glendale Housing Authority has developed more than 2,900 units of affordable housing for low-income renters and homeowners to date, according to the City of Glendale.
More Affordable Housing on the Way
EAH Housing, working with Egan | Simon Architecture and ICON National, plans to convert Parkview Glendale, a former assisted living facility, into an affordable housing property, according to REBusinessOnline. That conversion will bring 67 affordable apartments and a separate manager unit, comprising 20 studios and 47 one-bedroom apartments, designed to serve older adults earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income.
