Golden Gate will open a new high-limit slot room Friday, adding a premium gaming area as the oldest hotel-casino on Fremont Street continues its shift away from live-dealer games. The project expands the casino floor into space that previously served different functions, including a period as Circa Sports’ Risk Room and an earlier use as part of a hotel kitchen, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The room uses wood finishes, lounge seating and low ceilings to evoke an older Fremont Street atmosphere while housing modern slot machines. Golden Gate connected the northwest portion of the property to the main casino floor by moving a wall, the Review-Journal reported. The available reporting does not establish the room’s machine count, size or financial terms.
A casino floor built around electronic play
The opening follows Golden Gate’s September 2025 removal of its live-dealer table games. The casino now offers electronic table games and slot machines, while its former Dancing Dealers continue at sister properties Circa Resort & Casino and The D Las Vegas, according to Casino.org. That makes the high-limit room part of a larger operating change, not an isolated addition to a conventional blackjack-and-poker floor.
Golden Gate’s move has a nearby comparison. The Plaza opened a 2,000-square-foot high-limit slot room with 53 machines and dedicated guest services for players seeking privacy and personalized service, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The two projects show that downtown operators are making room for higher-limit slot play, but they are examples of individual property strategies rather than proof of an industrywide trend.
A new room with an older precedent
High-limit gaming is also not entirely new to Golden Gate. A 2012 renovation transformed the property into a boutique hotel and casino and added an elegant high-limit section, according to Vegas Experience. The current project therefore represents a renewed investment in premium play, while the electronic-only floor marks a more fundamental change in how the casino operates.
The timing comes amid a mixed downtown gaming environment. Downtown Las Vegas casinos recorded $68.5 million in gaming win in July, down 8.6% from a year earlier, according to CDC Gaming. Against that backdrop, Golden Gate and the Plaza are adding or upgrading high-limit slot offerings, although the available figures do not show how much either room will contribute to revenue.
The projects fit the character of the Fremont Street corridor, which the Fremont Street Experience describes as a five-block entertainment district where vintage Las Vegas attractions meet modern amenities. Golden Gate’s new room applies that same combination inside the casino: a deliberately old-fashioned setting wrapped around an electronic gaming product.
