Munoz, who was riding in the car with her wife and Arturo and Maria Munoz when the crash happened, spent the following months recovering from her own injuries before resuming her duties this month.
A Crash That Took Five Lives on Highway 101
The wreck happened around 12:45 a.m. on May 15, 2026, after the Trinity Fire Department received an automated iPhone crash notification from Highway 101 near the Bellview Road Extension in Spartanburg County, according to BFMG.news. South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Nick Pye said the crash was a head-on collision between a northbound 2025 Ford SUV and a southbound 2016 Toyota SUV carrying the Munoz family as they returned home from a vacation, as reported by WLTX. As reported by WYFF, the crash killed Munoz's wife, Greenville Police Sgt. Ashley Munoz, along with Arturo and Maria Munoz, plus two others.
Deborah Sue Wyatt, 50, and Max Douglas Wyatt Jr., 46, both of Duncan, were identified as the occupants of the Ford SUV who died in the collision, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office as detailed by the Post and Courier. The two occupants of the Ford SUV were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the same account.
Two Sergeants, One Department
Both women held supervisory rank within the Greenville Police Department at the time of the crash. Ashley Munoz was a sergeant with the department, according to footage shared by WSPA.
Before her medical leave, Diana Munoz served with the Greenville Police Department.
Community Mourning and City Response
A public memorial was set up outside the City of Greenville Public Safety Campus at 204 Halton Road, surrounding a parked patrol car with wreaths, flowers, and hand-written signs where officers and residents could leave messages for the family, per the Post and Courier.
Days later, during its May 18, 2026 meeting, the Greenville City Council formally offered citywide condolences to the Munoz family and the police force, according to the Upstate Business Journal.
Funerals and a Long Road to Recovery
Funerals for Ashley Munoz and her parents, Maria and Arturo Munoz, were held on June 25, 2026, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville, with police officers and Upstate residents attending to pay their respects, according to footage from Fox Carolina.
After 10 weeks of recovery, Diana Munoz took her first steps again. She has since recovered from those injuries and resumed her duties with the Greenville Police Department, per WYFF's report. Open questions remain about any final crash reconstruction or fault determination from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
