Gunfire tore through a crowd gathered outside a building on the 450 block of Trumbull Avenue just after midnight, grazing a 53-year-old man on the back of his neck and a 39-year-old woman on her face. A bullet also pierced the man's car. Both Bridgeport residents were not seriously hurt and declined transport to the hospital.
According to News 12 Westchester, police responded to the area around 12:10 a.m. after ShotSpotter technology detected numerous rounds fired near the outdoor crowd. Investigators recovered multiple shell casings between apartments on Yaremich Drive and in the rear parking lot of 455 Trumbull Avenue, according to FOX61, which reported the wide spread of casings across the two properties. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact lead Detective Tim Leonard at (203) 581-5253.
Police said information about who pulled the trigger and what sparked the shooting was not immediately available. No arrests had been made as of Saturday evening, and the case is being handled by the Detective Bureau's Shooting Task Force.
A Housing Complex With A Violent History
The address at the center of the shooting sits within Trumbull Gardens, a federally subsidized public housing complex managed by Park City Communities that spans 55 townhouse buildings totaling 274 units plus two eight-story high-rise towers, per HUD records published by ProPublica and property data from Affordable Housing Online. It is not the first time gunfire has torn through the complex. On June 11, 2015, gunmen fired more than 50 rounds into a crowd at the same 455 Trumbull Avenue address, killing one person and injuring eight others, the same FOX61 report notes.
Federal court records from a 2022 sentencing memorandum filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut documented that Trumbull Gardens served as a core operational territory for local street gangs, including the Original North End gang, which carried out shootings and drug distribution on the property. Just months before this latest shooting, an 18-year-old man was shot three times in a public housing parking lot in the 300 block of Trumbull Avenue after ShotSpotter detected four rounds, according to a Patch report from May.
Recent Investments Amid Ongoing Safety Concerns
Despite the street's troubled history, Trumbull Gardens has seen measurable physical improvements. Federal HUD physical inspection scores for the complex rose from a failing 37 to a passing 76, CT Mirror reported in January. State Senator Herron Gaston also announced in May that state grant funds were being reallocated to support community programs and facility improvements at the Trumbull Gardens Community Center, according to a release from the Connecticut General Assembly.
Those local investments come as Bridgeport's overall violent crime numbers have trended downward. Homicides in the city dropped 50 percent from a five-year high of 24 in 2020 to 12 in 2024, per Bridgeport Police Department Crime Analysis Unit statistics reported by News 12 Connecticut. That progress has occurred even as the department has worked through a shortage of roughly 60 officers, with city officials still reporting a 34 percent drop in shooting incidents and a 40 percent drop in non-fatal shooting victims year-over-year, according to WSHU.
The Trumbull Avenue shooting follows other recent gun violence cases in the city.
