A 40-year-old Harnett County man has been missing for more than two weeks after he was last seen at the Bald Head Island Marina, and despite an expanding search involving state investigators, the Coast Guard and human-remains-detection dogs, authorities say they still have not found him or any sign of what happened to him.
Nathaniel Bane was last seen around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the marina on Bald Head Island, according to Bald Head Island Public Safety. As reported by the Charlotte Observer, Bane lives in Harnett County, more than 170 miles inland from the remote barrier island where he disappeared.
Search Widens to Water and Enlists State Investigators
Bald Head Island Public Safety began an intensified search for Bane on Sept. 25, nearly two weeks after he went missing, bringing in the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office to assist, per the department's own statement. That effort also drew in the Oak Island Fire Drone Unit, Oak Island Water Rescue, North Carolina Wildlife officers and Brunswick County Search and Rescue, all of whom the department publicly thanked for joining the search.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation also joined the case, deploying coastal district special agents, a boat team and human-remains-detection K-9s to comb both the island and the surrounding waters, including the area where Bane was last seen. That search, conducted Monday, turned up nothing of significance, according to WRAL.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries Marine Patrol also assisted with the water search, according to a report from WCTI12, underscoring how far the search has expanded beyond the island's shoreline in the hunt for answers.
Officials Believe Bane Left the Island, but the Search Continues
Despite the scale of the search, Bald Head Island Public Safety says it has not located Bane on the island and that all evidence suggests he is no longer there. Investigators believe he has left the island, but the same report notes that searches will continue regardless. The department has said it plans to keep searching for Bane in the coming days.
Officials have not said why Bane was visiting Bald Head Island in the first place, and that detail remains unresolved. The department did note that there is no information indicating a threat to the community despite the visible increase in law-enforcement activity on the island. Anyone who sees Bane or notices anything unusual is asked to call 911.
A Remote Island Reachable Only by Boat
The circumstances of Bane's disappearance are made stranger by the geography itself. Bald Head Island sits at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and is the southernmost of North Carolina's Cape islands, roughly 170 miles southeast of downtown Raleigh, according to the Charlotte Observer. It can only be reached by passenger ferry or private vessel — there is no bridge or roadway connecting it to the mainland.
The island spans about 12,000 acres, with roughly 10,000 acres of untouched beach, marsh and maritime forest preserves, according to the same report. That terrain, combined with the island's isolation, has made the search for Bane especially difficult for the agencies involved.
