Power went dark across Hawaii Kai and several surrounding East Oahu neighborhoods on Sunday night after an outage struck around 8:08 p.m., cutting electricity to roughly 13,750 Hawaiian Electric customers. The lights were back on for most of the affected area by 9 p.m., a fast turnaround that still left residents from Aina Haina to Waimanalo scrambling in the dark for the better part of an hour.
The outage hit a wide swath of East Honolulu, including Hahaione, Hawaii Loa Ridge, Kalama Valley, Kamiloiki, Koko Head, Koko Marina, Niu Valley, Portlock, and Wailupe, according to Hawaii News Now. Hawaiian Electric confirmed first responders were sent to the area as the outage unfolded Sunday evening, and the utility restored power to the Hawaii Kai area by 9 p.m. The cause of the outage remains under investigation.
Hawaiian Electric was also careful to clarify what the outage was not: a Public Safety Power Shutoff. That distinction matters because PSPS programs are designed to proactively cut power during high winds and dry conditions as a wildfire-prevention measure. The cause of Sunday's blackout remains under investigation.
A Grid Shaped by Steep, Wind-Battered Terrain
East Honolulu's vulnerability to sudden blackouts traces back to geography. Bulk power to Hawaii Kai relies on transmission infrastructure in steep terrain, according to Hawaiian Electric. Those high-voltage corridors run through terrain that is notoriously difficult to access for repairs and prone to weather-related disruptions, a structural weak point that has repeatedly surfaced in East Oahu's power history.
The pattern isn't new. In April 2024, a transmission failure left approximately 1,353 Hawaii Kai customers without power. Vegetation clearing was planned near the Koolau base.
Helicopter inspections of fallen lines have also been used in storm responses.
Coming After a Rough Stretch of Storms
Sunday's outage landed on an island grid that has already taken a beating this year. Tropical Storm Lala, downgraded from a hurricane, left about 200,000 residents without power across Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island, as reported by Honolulu Civil Beat. Against that backdrop, a brief evening blackout in Hawaii Kai is a reminder of how frequently East Oahu's power reliability gets tested.
The scale of Sunday's outage was still notable on its own terms, with 13,750 customers affected in Hawaii Kai.

For now, Hawaiian Electric has not announced what caused Sunday's disruption.
