A head-on crash near Rancho Cordova left at least one person with major injuries Wednesday morning, shutting down Mather Boulevard in both directions and snarling traffic near Douglas Road. The collision happened shortly after 8 a.m. near Mather Boulevard and Douglas Road, and it was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved.
The California Highway Patrol's East Sacramento office reported that Mather Boulevard is closed in both directions between Douglas Road and Alert Road because of the crash, according to CBS News. No timeline for when the roadway would reopen had been given as of Wednesday afternoon.
Details beyond the initial scene remain limited. A woman, a 12-year-old and another person were hospitalized with major injuries.
Closure Stretches Along a Key Rancho Cordova Corridor
Mather Boulevard is in the Rancho Cordova area, and a shutdown between Douglas Road and Alert Road cuts off a significant stretch for drivers trying to get through the area. KCRA also reported that CHP said Mather Boulevard was closed in both directions between those same two cross streets.

Not the First Serious Crash in the Mather Area
Head-on collisions have proven deadly in this part of Sacramento County before. In November 2024, KCRA reported that one person was killed and another injured in a car crash in Mather, after CHP said a Tesla driver attempting to pass multiple vehicles struck an oncoming Ford Fusion head-on. That crash occurred near Excelsior Road and Kiefer Boulevard, a different intersection from Wednesday's closure, but it underscores how dangerous head-on impacts can be along the area's roadways.
For now, drivers in the Rancho Cordova area should expect delays and plan alternate routes around Mather Boulevard until CHP provides further updates on when the road will reopen.
