A Nissan Armada crossed into oncoming traffic on FM 2620 just north of Highway 30 near Shiro early Monday morning, slamming head-on into a Chevrolet Silverado and killing both drivers. Three children who were riding in the Armada were airlifted to a Houston hospital in critical condition, while a passenger in the Silverado was hospitalized as well.
Two Drivers Killed, Three Children Airlifted
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m., according to telemundocentraltexas.com. Katie Harper, 41, of Bedias, was behind the wheel of the Nissan Armada when it crossed into the southbound lane and struck the Silverado head-on, per the Navasota Examiner, which reported the crash occurred at 7:30 a.m. on FM 2620 near Texas 30, citing DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz. Harper died at the scene, according to telemundocentraltexas.com.
Three children who were riding in Harper's vehicle — ages 9, 11 and 14 — were airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, the Navasota Examiner reported. The outlet described their condition as critical. Telemundo Central Texas separately reported that the three children were taken to a Houston hospital with serious injuries.
Silverado Driver, Passenger Also Hurt
The driver of the Silverado, Gilbert Urbano Jr., 49, of San Antonio, was killed in the crash, according to the same telemundocentraltexas.com report. A passenger in the Silverado, 28-year-old Keith Hilton, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and was in serious condition, the Navasota Examiner reported.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is actively investigating the crash, telemundocentraltexas.com reported.
Second Deadly Crash Reported Nearby Days Earlier
The Monday crash came days after a separate head-on collision just after 6 a.m. Saturday on Highway 90 north of Bedias near Tanglewood Lane, according to telemundocentraltexas.com. In that crash, a black 2019 Ford F-150 traveling in the wrong lane collided head-on with a red 2019 Ford F-150, the outlet reported. The driver of the red truck, identified as Ashley Ritcher, 34, of Bedias, also died; her six-year-old son survived and was taken to a Houston hospital with serious injuries, per the same report.
