A Honda sedan crossed into the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 17/92 near West James Street late Saturday night, slamming head-on into a Nissan sedan and killing two people while seriously injuring two others, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 11:55 p.m. as the Honda, driven by a 41-year-old Davenport man, was traveling southbound before it drifted into oncoming traffic.
The Nissan, driven by a 37-year-old Kissimmee man, was carrying two passengers: a 34-year-old Winter Haven man and a 45-year-old Kissimmee woman. Both the Kissimmee driver and the Kissimmee woman died from injuries suffered in the crash, FHP said, according to reporting by Tampa Bay 28. The Winter Haven man and the Honda driver were both transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.
Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins relayed additional details on the timeline of the wreck to the Daily Ridge, confirming the collision occurred at approximately 11:55 p.m. Saturday. Under Florida Statute § 316.081, drivers are required to stay on the right half of the roadway and are barred from crossing the center line into opposing lanes except when safely passing or avoiding an obstruction, per the Florida Legislature.
A Separate Lane-Departure Crash in Davenport
Saturday's collision was distinct from a June 13 crash at U.S. 17/92 and Sunny Acres Road in Davenport. In that earlier incident, a northbound Toyota Corolla crossed into the southbound lane and struck a semi-truck, killing the Toyota driver; investigators said a phone was found in the driver's hand, according to WTSP.
How the crashes differed
The June 13 wreck occurred around 2:24 p.m. at a different intersection and involved a Toyota and a semi-truck, while Saturday's crash occurred near West James Street late at night and involved a Honda and a Nissan. The available verified research identifies that June incident as a comparable documented lane-departure crash, but does not establish a complete three-year list of similar crashes on Polk County highways.
