The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said the collision happened near Lancelot Drive, a stretch of road between Romeo Plank and Card. Both men died — one at the scene, the other after being rushed to a hospital.
According to the WXYZ 7 News Detroit, the crash happened around 11:18 p.m. on 23 Mile Road at Lancelot Drive. The pickup, driven by a 60-year-old Harrison Township man, was headed west on 23 Mile without its headlights on when it crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a van head-on, the sheriff's office said.
Conflicting Reports on Timing
Not every outlet has the timing pinned down the same way. While WXYZ reported the crash occurred around 11:18 p.m., Audacy reported the crash happened just before midnight along the same stretch of 23 Mile near Lancelot. Audacy's account also identifies the pickup as a Silverado and the van as a white Chevrolet Express.
The van driver, a 30-year-old Macomb Township man, was pronounced dead at the scene, the station reported. The pickup driver, the 60-year-old Harrison Township man, was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Their names had not been released as of the latest reporting.
Road Reopened Wednesday Morning
Twenty-three Mile Road was shut down for several hours as crews worked the scene, reopening to traffic around 5 a.m. Wednesday, per the same account. The closure affected the corridor between Romeo Plank and Card while investigators documented the crash site overnight.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said its investigation into the crash remains ongoing. No further details have been released about what led the pickup to cross the center line or why its headlights were off at the time of the collision.
