A 26-year-old man was stabbed to death and a 35-year-old woman was wounded Wednesday afternoon inside a residential building in Hell's Kitchen, according to police. The attack unfolded around 2:45 p.m. at a West 47th Street building, near Ninth Avenue, leaving neighbors on the Midtown West block shaken by a burst of daytime violence inside their own building.
Police identified the man who died as John Carlos Mesa, who was knifed in the torso, according to police cited by PIX11. The woman was stabbed in the neck and back, police said. Both victims were rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside, a state-verified Level 2 Trauma Center with round-the-clock trauma surgery teams, where Mesa was pronounced dead, according to FOX 5 New York. The woman was listed in stable condition, the station's report noted.
Police described Mesa in some reports as a homeless man killed during an argument inside the building, per the same account. A man was taken into custody in connection with the crime, but as of the initial reporting he had not been charged, leaving the exact circumstances of the confrontation unresolved.
Building Sits in Busy Midtown West Patrol Zone
The stabbing scene falls within the patrol boundaries of the NYPD's Midtown North Precinct, headquartered on West 54th Street, which covers Manhattan's West Side from 42nd Street to 59th Street west of Eighth Avenue, according to the NYPD. The precinct, which also patrols Restaurant Row and the Theater District, recorded 10,194 total crimes, 5,467 arrests, and 5 shooting incidents during 2025, according to official NYPD data.
The building itself, a 5-story, 46-unit residential rental elevator structure built in 1940, was sold to Stone Street Properties in 2016 for $23.5 million, according to The Real Deal. The property sits between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and contains a mix of market-rate and rent-stabilized apartments.
Part of a Summer of Knife Violence in the Neighborhood
Wednesday's stabbing is the latest in a string of knife attacks that have rattled Hell's Kitchen in recent months. Just eight days earlier, on September 1, a 45-year-old man was slashed in the neck outside a deli five blocks away at 10th Avenue and West 52nd Street, as Hoodline previously reported.
On July 23, two men were stabbed in the back during an overnight confrontation on Eighth Avenue near West 46th Street, steps from the Theater District; both survived after treatment at Bellevue Hospital. A Hell's Kitchen stabbing killed one man and wounded a woman.
Local Board Weighs In as Legal Questions Loom
Hell's Kitchen falls within Manhattan Community District 4, served by Manhattan Community Board 4. The board has an advisory role involving land use and housing, while questions about this latest attack remain unanswered.
Under New York Penal Law Section 120.05, intentionally causing physical injury to another person with a knife or dangerous instrument constitutes Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony punishable by up to seven years in state prison. Under Penal Law Section 125.25, intentionally causing the death of another person is classified as Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-I felony carrying a mandatory sentence of 15 to 25 years to life imprisonment. No charges had been filed against the man taken into custody as of the initial reporting, leaving open questions about what led to the deadly encounter.
