A 29-year-old Hesperia man is behind bars after detectives say he posed as a 17-year-old boy online to obtain explicit images from a 15-year-old girl living in Minnesota. Cameron David Nelson was arrested on September 3 following an investigation that began with a tip from a national child-safety clearinghouse, and bail was set at $100,000.
According to Victor Valley News Group, the case traces back to July 13, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent a CyberTip to Detective Elizabeth Holguin concerning suspected possession of child sexual abuse material. Investigators with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Specialized Investigations Division Crimes Against Children Detail worked the tip and determined that Nelson had used an online chat platform to contact the girl, telling her he was 17 years old even though he is 29. Detectives allege he went on to receive explicit images from her.
Nelson was booked into the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, a Type II facility with a capacity of more than 2,100 inmates run by the sheriff's department, according to Dan's Bail Bonds. Authorities listed the incident location as the 16000 block of Adelia Street in Hesperia. He is suspected of contacting a minor to commit a sex offense under Penal Code 288.3(a) and of possession of child pornography under Penal Code 311.11(a), the report states.
What the Charges Could Mean
Under Penal Code 288.3(a), enacted as part of Jessica's Law in 2006, communicating with a minor with intent to commit a felony sex crime carries up to three years in state prison, fines as high as $10,000, and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration, according to Simmons Wagner, LLP. The statute functions as an attempted-crime law, letting police intervene before any physical contact occurs.
The separate CSAM charge under Penal Code 311.11(a) carries different penalties depending on whether the offense is charged as a misdemeanor or felony, per Eisner Gorin LLP. Notably, California courts have held that “possession” under that statute can include accessing or viewing digital material online in real time, even without saving or downloading files, according to Cron Israels and Stark.
Detectives Say More Victims May Exist
Detectives believe there may be additional victims beyond the 15-year-old girl in Minnesota, the sheriff's department said. The department released Nelson's photograph as part of the ongoing investigation and is asking anyone with information to contact Detective Elizabeth Holguin at 909-890-4904. Anonymous tipsters can also call or text We-Tip at 844-909-3006 or submit reports online through the sheriff's department's reporting system.
Part of a Wider Pattern in San Bernardino County
The NCMEC CyberTipline report involving Cameron David Nelson was routed through a national reporting system to a local law-enforcement agency for investigation. Online child-enticement reports are part of the broader national reporting picture.
San Bernardino County's Crimes Against Children Detail, which sits within the Specialized Investigations Division alongside the Homicide Detail, has been especially active this year. In August, a separate case involved the arrest of a 21-year-old Crestline man. Back in May 2024, an undercover operation in Hesperia involved an alleged 14-year-old.
