A man was shot and killed Tuesday night at the intersection of Avenue 64 and York Boulevard in Highland Park, and the gunman remains at large after fleeing the scene in a black Tesla Model 3 sedan. Los Angeles police officers responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection at approximately 8:15 p.m. and found the male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to KTLA, the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not released the victim's identity. Police described the shooter as a Hispanic man who opened fire before escaping in the Tesla. Witnesses with information are asked to call LAPD at 1-877-527-3247.
A Corner With a Painful History
Tuesday's shooting occurred at an intersection that has seen tragedy before. In May 2008, the same stretch of Avenue 64 and York Boulevard was the site of a gang crossfire shooting that killed 14-year-old Cynthia Perez, who was struck by a bullet during gunfire directed at Fabian Aguirre while sitting in her family's SUV, according to the Los Angeles Times. Gun violence has continued to surface along the same corridor in more recent years. Northeast Division's Wide Territory
The LAPD's Northeast Community Police Station patrols a 29-square-mile territory covering roughly 250,000 residents across 14 Eastside and Northeast Los Angeles communities, including neighboring Eagle Rock, Glassell Park, and Silver Lake, according to LAPD Online. Notably, Highland Park's own historic police station once stood at 6045 York Boulevard, operating from 1926 until 1983 before it was converted into the Los Angeles Police Museum, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, per Wikipedia. LAPD relocated its Northeast Division headquarters to San Fernando Road when that station closed.
Isolated Violence Amid Falling Citywide Crime
The shooting comes even as Los Angeles has posted a historic low in homicides. The city recorded 230 homicides in 2025, the lowest annual total since 1966, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. LAPD homicide detectives also closed 68% of 2025's homicide cases while officers seized 8,650 firearms citywide, 1,000 more than the year before, with Chief Jim McDonnell attributing an 8% reduction in gunshot victims to increased gun seizures, according to Police1.
